My favourite London Pubs

For me, a good pub ticks a few boxes: friendly atmosphere, a decent selection on draft, and a bit of character. Luckily, London seems to have an endless supply! Here are a few of my favourites I've unearthed during my travels and time as a local.

Riverside Rambles:

The Captain Kidd, Wapping: This historic pub, dating back to the 16th century, is a real charmer. Nestled right on the Thames, it boasts a fantastic beer garden with picnic benches – perfect for a sunny afternoon pint with a view of the river.

The Angel, Bermondsey: Another riverside gem, The Angel is a gastropub with a relaxed vibe. The huge windows and (dodgy) balcony over the bank edge offer stunning views of Tower Bridge and the Shard cityscape. This pub is great for a quiet afternoon or evening beer overlooking the river. In summer, grab a pint and sit out on the riverside to soak up the city from afar.

The Mayflower, Rotherhithe: This traditional pub feels like it's straight out of a Charles Dickens novel. Cosy nooks and crannies, a roaring fireplace in winter, and a proper beer garden with great views over the Thames in all seasons (it's heated!) – it's the perfect spot for a pint and some delicious food. I recommend the pie and the sausages and mash.

Local Legends:

The Woolpack, Bermondsey This pub boasts an excellent beer garden and great food to make for an excellent night along the cool Bermondsey Street. Bonus: there's a great Italian restaurant up the road called Flour and Grape, and this is possibly the perfect end to an afternoon of patio beers.

The Griffin Inn, Shoreditch: This Shoreditch gem offers a taste of the area's creative energy. During the week, the surrounding pavement overflows with locals enjoying a post-work tipple (It's me - I was one of those locals). Exposed brickwork, local artwork, and a fantastic selection of craft beers on tap make it a great spot tucked away from Shoreditch high street.

The Marksman, Hackney: This East London gastropub boasts incredible food and amazing wine list - rare for a London pub! The delicious small plates are perfect for sharing and the candle lit interior makes it the perfect cosy venue - this is your fancy pub!

The Coborn, Mile End: This Victorian pub is a real looker, with beautiful interior, family friendly, and stained-glass windows and ornate tiling. They serve a beautiful menu staying true to their East London roots; think traditional pie and mash (I tried the chicken pie and it was delicious), fish and chips, and scotch eggs. It's a great place to bring friends, family, or visit solo for a great meal.

The Churchill Arms, Kensington: Packed with Churchill memorabilia and boasting a quirky, eclectic décor, this pub is a fun and lively spot for an evening pint. It also prides itself as both and entrant and winner in the Chelsea Flower Show each year!

Leadenhall Delights:

Let's not forget the after-work scene! If you find yourself working near Leadenhall Market, The Lamb Tavern is a historic pub and a true City institution. With its wood-panelled walls and traditional atmosphere, it's a great place to unwind and soak up the history after a long day in the office. Spot the suit - it's easy!

This is just a taste of the incredible pub scene London has to offer. With so many options to explore, I'm sure there's a perfect pub for everyone waiting to be discovered. So, raise a glass, and cheers to exploring London one pint at a time!
