I've been lucky enough to return to the beautiful city of lights, but this time for work, with a generous side of leisure of course! And Paris has embraced me with open arms (and countless croissants).
Having been to Paris many a time before, ticking off the tourist bucket list, I ditched the rigid itinerary and opted to wander the charming streets when I could. There's a certain romance to simply observing Parisian life unfold.
Given my work commitments, most of my free time revolved around finding great places to eat, enjoying a drink on a terrace, and watching Parisian life go by! Paris is a paradise for foodies and people watchers, and I was on a mission to experience every element and all different kinds of restaurants.
Here's a glimpse into my Parisian dining adventures:
Le Petit Marché: This charming bistro in the Marais neighborhood is perfect for a casual lunch or dinner. Their menu features seasonal French fare with a focus on fresh, local ingredients. Popular with locals and tourists alike.
Brasserie Des Prie: Dive into classic French comfort food at this cozy brasserie in Saint-Germain-des-Prés. Think steak frites, onion soup, and decadent desserts. a bustling restaurant, with a bougie bar upstairs if you're around for late night cocktails. I recommend a trip to the restrooms for some glamourous decor!
Brasserie Martin: This modern brasserie in the 18th arrondissement offers classic French comfort food at affordable prices. It's part of the Les Nouvelle Garde group (same as Brasserie Des Prie above). We tried the pork for two, which came with the most delicious potato dauphinoise. The Paris Brest dessert is also highly rated and a must do - but maybe share it!
Laperouse: Indulge in a truly historic Parisian experience at this Michelin-starred institution. Refined French cuisine and impeccable service await, complete with a live musician to drive the ambiance. The wine list itself is about 50 pages (too much to actually make a decision) but we were recommended a beautiful bottle from Cote de Rhone by the Sommelier. We tried the beef tartare with caviar and it was possible one of the best things I've eaten! The cocktail bar downstairs is perfect to finish your drinks, or arrive a little earlier to soak up the atmosphere. This is definitely attracts some artsy types, so be prepared for luxe people watching.
Le Petit Culs: Both a bar and a restaurant, this upscale menu and curated wine list take you straight to the good stuff. The Duck was the perfect balance of modern and traditional French flavours, with the addition of ceviche amuse bouche as a nice touch to start. Highly recommended.
Le Baron Rouge: Right across the road from Le Petit Culs, soak up the Parisian atmosphere at this superb wine bar in a small street, to stand around tall tables, glass of wine in hand, cheese, meats and other delights are served. This is a bustling place on any evening, but small enough to feel cosy.
Pink Mamma: This trendy 4 story rooftop restaurant in Pigalle boasts stunning views of the Sacré-Coeur basilica and a vibrant atmosphere. Expect creative Italian cuisine with a playful twist. Their pasta and buratta were divine, and we treated ourselves to a bottle of the sparkling Lambrusco in Italian brunch style.
Carette on Place de Vosges: This Parisian institution is a must-visit for any chocolate or pastry lover. Their decadent treats are perfect for a sweet afternoon pick-me-up, and their brunch layout is delightfully instagrammable (I was on a work visit so had to act professional - read: no pictures!) Emily in Paris also thought it was great...
Cafe Hugo: Enjoy a leisurely breakfast or brunch on the terrace of this chic cafe in the Marais, right on the sunny square. I actually dined here for a solo dinner and the service and atmosphere were perfect. Their menu features both French classics and international favorites.
Comptoir de la Gastronomie: This gourmet grocery store and restaurant in Saint-Germain-des-Prés is a haven for foodies. Sample delicious regional specialties or grab a quick bite at their counter. I waited about 15 mins for a table at the counter, but the Fois Gras and Champagne were just what I needed after a busy day! I'd recommend browsing their produce to take some goodies home.
Les Deux Magots: This historic cafe in Saint-Germain-des-Prés has been a popular spot for writers and intellectuals for centuries. It's a great place to soak up the Parisian atmosphere and enjoy a cup of coffee or a light meal. Their French onion soup and glass of Bordeaux was the light dinner I needed in the perfect spot to watch Paris go by.
Freddy's: The owner is also the proprietor of wine shop around the corner along with a string of venues in this winding street of St Germain. The small bites (duck hearts, crispy falafel, sliced Iberico ham, cerviche) are just what you want to nibble on with a glass of wine. This place gets busy, so it's best to come early, or just with 1 or 2 friends in order to snag a spot at the bustling bar.
L'Etna: Not far from Freddy's, this Sicilian wine bar and restaurant in the heart of St Germain Des Prie offers a curated selection of natural wines, and extensive and interesting bar bites.
Sourire Galande: This lively tapas bar in the Marais is a great place to sample a variety of French tapas. Their menu features both classic and modern dishes.
Bar du Marche: This is a bustling sport for a drink, to people watch and to soak up the vibe. I have no idea about food, but its a very popular drinking hole.
Les Epiciers: This gourmet grocery store and restaurant in the 10th arrondissement is a haven for foodies. Sample delicious regional specialties and enjoy a charcuterie and cheese board with an exquisite wine selection. I was here for a couple of work functions in the cellar downstairs, and the wines were unique, interesting and paired amazingly with the food. I recommend purchasing a few bottles here to take home too!
Back in Black: It's not all about the food; this trendy coffee shop in Bastille is area is a great place to get your caffeine fix. The coffee is approved by Australians, so you know it will be good ;)
Despite this lengthy list, it's just a taste of the incredible culinary scene that Paris has to offer. With so many amazing restaurants to choose from, you're sure to find something to tantalize your taste buds on your next visit.
This trip has been much more about 'living' in Paris than just sightseeing. It's been about embracing new experiences, rediscovering the joy of simply being present, and making the most of this amazing opportunity to be working in Paris. Paris is a city that celebrates life, art, and beauty, and it's definitely working its magic on me.
