The open road stretched before us, flanked by endless waves of Illinois cornfields, we set our sights on a charming country escape: Galena, a historic town nestled in between the rolling hills in the northwestern corner of the state.
This little gem, just a 3-hour drive from the hustle and bustle of Chicago, transported us back in time. Imagine strolling down the main street of a country town, lined with meticulously preserved 19th-century buildings, where each brick is a remnant of the town's fascinating past. It was once a hub for Civil War generals, including the iconic Ulysses S. Grant, where you can take a visit to his home to learn more about the famous Civil War General and 18th US President.
But Galena doesn't just tend to history buffs, it's a treasure trove for anyone seeking a delightful weekend getaway. Whether you're drawn to boutique shopping for unique finds, browsing through the many antique stores brimming with character, or simply indulging in a cup of coffee at a quaint cafe, the town caters to every whim.
For those seeking culinary delights, Galena offers a smorgasbord of options. Quite a few regional wineries have tasting rooms, but the real highlight are the great restaurants such as Fried Green Tomatoes and Log Cabin Steakhouse, as well as taverns and breweries that have live music over the weekends. The best bakery in town is Galena Bakehouse, but Bread and Vine, also hits the spot! This country town really does offer up all of the foodie goods a classic country town should.
And if you're an outdoor enthusiast, Galena won't disappoint. Immerse yourself in the beauty of nature on scenic hikes or bike rides, tee off on pristine golf courses in the summer months, or hit the slopes in the winter (yes, you read that right!). Though mountains in Illinois may be absent, the rolling hills provide ample terrain for winter sports enthusiasts.
For golf aficionados, Galena boasts a world-class selection of courses to challenge your swing. We stayed at the accommodation at Eagle Ridge Resort & Spa which is a sprawling complex offering four championship courses, plus a great pool and spa to relax in after a day out! The sunny deck of the onsite Highland Restaurant overlooks the beautiful rolling hills of Galena is a great location to relax and order a delicious woodfire pizza. In the winter time, you can race down the 10th hole of the General Course for an afternoon of winter fun.
Galena truly offers something for everyone. Whether you're seeking history, charm, delicious food, or outdoor adventures, this little town packs a big punch.
So, pack your bags, hit the road, and roll through the cornfields to discover the timeless charm of Galena, Illinois.
If you've been to Galena, or any other equally charming country towns in the US, I'd love to hear about your own adventures!
