I just got back from a whirlwind trip to Sydney, my hometown, and after a jam-packed few weeks of catching up with friends and indulging (a little too much!), I'm here to share some of my top eats and drinks for anyone looking for a delicious adventure in Sydney.
First up, let's talk food.
Here are some special restaurants I went to this visit:
Barbetta, Paddington: This place is a revelation! Modern Italian with a focus on fresh, seasonal ingredients. Perfect for a date night or a special occasion. We went for lunch midweek and it was still very packed, so make sure you make a booking!
The Apollo, Potts Point: Calling all Greek food lovers - this institution offers delicious a la carte dishes and a very filling set menu, including their famous slow roasted lamb shoulder, coupled with amazing service. The cocktails are also great - try the olive oil martini.
Fratelli Paradiso, Potts Point: This longstanding Italian favourite in Potts Point boasts an excellent lasagna. With its' ever-changing blackboard menu, it's always packed, so ensure you book in advance.
MuMu: This vibrant spot in the centre of the city offers a delicious taste of South-East Asian street food, with a lively atmosphere, perfect for a fun night out. The betel leaf is exceptional.
Sealevel, Cronulla: Breathtaking views of the beach paired with fresh seafood – what's not to love? Perfect for a long, lazy lunch.
Bottega Coco, Barangaroo: This aesthetic restaurant oozes prestige, and we decided to try their afternoon tea. Probably the best scones I have had ever - so soft but still a little crunchie on the outside! We didn't feel rushed at all, and next time I'd love to stay for a drink in the bar adjacent, which amps up the elegance with very glamorous decor.
A little more casual:
Woolly Bay Hotel, Wooloomooloo: The BEST Chicken Parmi. Yes, you read that right. This pub classic might not be haute cuisine, but the Woolly Bay Hotel does it oh-so-well. Plus, the view of the harbor is pretty amazing.
Lord Dudley Hotel, Paddington: The Lord Dudley does an incredible Sunday roast, complete with all the trimmings. Cosy pub, local favourite, with great food and always an atmosphere.
Jack Gray, Gray's Point: This spot is tucked away in quiet suburbia, but it's worth the hunt. Modern Australian cafe cuisine, with an evening light bite menu for a sunset drink. A very chìc spot in an unexpected location.
Pina, Potts Point: Forget your average bacon and egg roll - Piña takes this Aussie staple to a whole new level. There is always a queue on the weekend, but arrive earlier than 9am and you should get a seat quickly!
Truffles Cafe, Potts Point: Coffee snobs take note! This place serves up some of the best brews in Sydney. When the line at Pina is humongous (always) you're best to wander 20m down the laneway to this amazing cafe for a guaranteed seat and guaranteed quality food.
The Dolphin Hotel, Surry Hills: A longtime favourite in this area, the interior is modern and is currently serving great woodfire pizzas and share plates. They also do a great pasta and wine special midweek if you'r like me and love a good deal!
Let's get you a drink:
The Boathouse, Rose Bay: Stunning waterfront location paired with an extensive cocktail list? Sign me up! Perfect for sunset drinks. The food here also looks amazing but I am yet to try - next visit!
Piccolo Bar, Kings Cross: Delicious nibbles and a seriously buzzy atmosphere for the perfect negroni - great place for a night cap.
Opera Bar: You can't visit Sydney without taking in the iconic views of the Harbour Bridge and Opera house from this outdoor venue. Grab a drink and soak it all in - it's cliche for a reason!
This is just a taste of what Sydney has to offer, and just my choices this time round - but I have so many more favourites! . Whether you're a local looking for new haunts or a visitor wanting to experience the best of the city's food and drink scene, I hope this list gives you some inspiration.
Happy eating and drinking!
