Wine Down in the City of Lights: A Guide to Parisian Wine Bars

Paris is a city synonymous with romance, art, and of course, incredible food and wine. I was lucky enough to spend a month in Paris for work, and in doing so, I managed to find myself a well deserved glass of wine at the coolest and most quaint bars in the city.

Whether you're a seasoned sommelier or a curious newcomer, these hidden gems offer a chance to sip on wines, sample delicious bites, and soak up the true Parisian atmosphere.

These were my favourites from my recent stay:

  • St Germain Gems:  Nestled in the winding streets of St Germain, discover two local favorites: Freddy's and L'Etna.  Freddy's, owned by a passionate wine connoisseur, boasts a constantly changing selection by the glass and delectable small plates perfect for sharing. Be prepared for a lively atmosphere and grab a spot at the bar early, or come with a small group.  Right around the corner, L'Etna offers a curated selection of natural Sicilian wines alongside a tempting array of interesting bar bites.

  • Cosy spaces: La Buvette in 11th arrondissement is a unique, popular, yet arrondissement little wine bar offering natural wines and delightful small plates that change on the daily. Highly recommended for a wine and cheese meal - my favorite kind!

  • People watching and Parisian buzz: Immerse yourself in the local scene at Bar du Marche. This bustling corner spot is a favourite for drinks (not necessarily wine, but all bars in Paris have great wine by default!), people-watching, and soaking up the Parisian vibe.

  • Join the Locals:  For a truly Parisian experience, head to Le Baron Rouge near the Aligre market. This bustling spot boasts a wide selection of wines by the glass at friendly prices. Be prepared for a local crowd and a lively atmosphere spilling onto the laneway – it's a favourite for a reason!

  • Tapas Time:   Sourire Galande is a lively restaurant bar which features a menu of both classic and modern French tapas, perfect for sharing with a group alongside a glass of regional wine.

  • Gourmet Paradise:  Head to the 10th arrondissement for a truly unique experience at Les Epiciers. This gourmet grocery store and restaurant is a haven for foodies. Sample delicious regional specialties and savor a charcuterie and cheese board paired with an exquisite wine selection.  Whether you visit for a casual bite or a special occasion, Les Epiciers offers a memorable experience, and you can even buy unique bottles to take home!

Tips for Your Parisian Wine Bar Hopping:

  • Embrace the small plates:  Many wine bars offer charcuterie boards, cheese plates, and other small dishes perfect for sharing.

  • Ask for recommendations: Don't be afraid to ask the friendly staff for suggestions based on your preferences. They're passionate about wine and love to share their knowledge.

  • Embrace the Parisian pace:  Settle in, savour your wine, and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere. Parisian evenings are not meant to be rushed.

I love wine, and Paris is the perfect setting to enjoy a glass of any kind. France provides a guaranteed tasty glass, even if it’s only a few Euro, which is why coming to France to enjoy the wine and food is a no brainer!

And if you also love food like me, I wrote about my favorite restaurants in Paris too so check it out before your next visit.

Santé! Bon appetit!
